What to Expect at Your First TMS Session

Are you thinking about trying TMS therapy? It’s normal to feel nervous before your first visit. Don’t worry, TMS is simple, safe, and made to help your brain feel better.

This blog will show you what happens during your first TMS session and how to get ready.

First: What Is TMS?

TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. It uses tiny magnetic pulses to help parts of your brain “wake up.” These parts help you feel happy, calm, and focused.

TMS does not use medicine. It’s not surgery. Most people feel better after a few weeks of TMS treatments.

Before You Come In

You don’t need to do much to get ready. But here are a few easy tips:

  • Eat a small snack or light meal

  • Take your regular medicine (unless your doctor says not to)

  • Wear comfy clothes

  • Bring headphones if you want music or a podcast

That’s it!

When You Arrive

At Modern Experience Clinic, we’ll greet you and make sure you feel safe and welcome. You’ll meet with a team member who will explain everything.

Then you’ll go to a quiet room with a soft chair. This is where you’ll sit for your session.

During Your First TMS Session

Here’s what happens:

  1. We place a small magnetic coil near your head

  2. You’ll hear tapping sounds and feel gentle pulses

  3. You sit still and relax. Many people read, listen to music, or close their eyes and meditate

  4. The treatment lasts about 30 minutes

It does not hurt. Some people say it feels like a tap or soft knocking on their head.

What Should I Do During TMS?

You can:

  • Listen to music

  • Breathe and relax

  • Think about your goals

  • Rest your eyes

  • Or just sit quietly

No phone calls or heavy thinking needed . This is your time to let your brain heal.

After Your Session

Most people go right back to work, school, or home. There are no shots, no downtime, and no medicine needed.

Some people feel a little tired or have a mild headache, but that goes away quickly.

How Often Do I Come Back?

You’ll usually come in:

  • 2 times per week for 3 weeks

  • Insurance requires daily treatments for 3 to 6 weeks, depending on your care plan

TMS works best when you come in on a regular schedule. We’ll help you stay on track.
